Imagine a city with 70 million people coming in every day. Some go to play, others to trade, many to socialize. But among them, there are also those who seek to take advantage of the ingenuity of the youngest.
That's Roblox.
What used to be the neighborhood square is now a global chat room with colorful avatars. And danger no longer waits in a dark corner: it appears with a smiley emoji that says "will you be my friend?".
- In 2024, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) CyberTipline registered 20.5 million reports36.2 million for 2023, although the actual number of incidents was 29.2 million. The cases of digital grooming (online enticement) shot up by 192 % (more than 546,000 reports), the child sex trafficking increased by 55 % (26,823 reports), and the reports linked to AI-generated content exploded a 1,325 %reaching 67,000 cases.
- The FBI warns that digital grooming is one of the fastest growing crimes in the world.
- According to Thorn, the 40% of adolescents acknowledges having received online sexual solicitations.
- In the United Kingdom, 1 in 5 children was contacted by a stranger in an online video game.
👉 Statistics don't lie: the risk is no longer anecdotal, it is systemic.
🎭 Cases that seem like fiction (but are not).
- United Kingdom: An 11-year-old girl met a supposed 12-year-old friend on Roblox. She ended up in a private chat on Discord: the "child" was a 37-year-old adult.
- USA: A child spent more than $2,500 on robux, manipulated by scammers who promised him secret worlds.
- Latin America: Recent cases confirm grooming in video games. The predator is not always far away: he can live in the same city.
⚠️ Roblox safety: the invisible risks that coexist in the game
- Avatars as masks → anyone can pretend to be a child. Today AI manufactures perfect identities in seconds.
- Chat as a trap → grooming, bullying and manipulation occur in conversations that parents never see.
- Robux as bait → scams, blackmail and fraud disguised as irresistible offers.
- Addictive design → games that do not end, rewards that generate dependence.
- The generation gap → Parents who "don't understand" and young people who believe that their parents don't understand anything. That void is the big security hole.

The debate is not only a family one, it is also a political one. In the United Kingdom, the online safety acta law that seeks to make digital platforms responsible for the risks for children and young people. A discussion that sooner or later will reach Latin America and Chile.
